Former police officer on the Mescalero Apache Reservation charged with sexual abuse

A former Bureau of Indian Affairs police officer faced a charge of sexual abuse of a minor in Indian Country, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office of New Mexico.

Dexter Whiskers, 43, of Mescalero, and an enrolled member of the San Juan Southern Paiute Tribe, made an initial appearance in federal court April 15, a press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office indicated.

He allegedly attempted to engage in a sexual act with a 13-year-old girl at her home on the Mescalero Apache Reservation in Otero County in October 2021, read the news release.

Whiskers was arrested April 14 on the Mescalero Apache Reservation, said Frank Fisher, FBI spokesperson.

He was booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center in Las Cruces on April 14 and was held on no bond, per the jail’s website.

A preliminary and detention hearing was scheduled for April 20, the news release noted.

If convicted, Whiskers faces up to 15 years in prison, the release cited.

The Las Cruces Resident Agency of the Albuquerque’s FBI Field Office investigated the case with assistance from New Mexico State Police and full cooperation with the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs.
