Lucifer was famously saved by Netflix after it was cancelled by Fox, and now lead star Tom Ellis is working with the streaming giant on another project, one that's... very different indeed.

As reported by TVLine, Netflix has ordered a series and a smartphone app based on the card game Exploding Kittens, which is "a card game for people who like kittens and explosions and laser beams and sometimes goats".

The Exploding Kittens animated series will be an adult comedy, and King of the Hill creators Mike Judge and Greg Daniels are involved behind the scenes.

The premise reads as follows: "The eternal conflict between Heaven and Hell reaches epic proportions when both God and the Devil are sent to Earth — in the bodies of chunky house cats."

Tom Ellis will be playing God Cat, Home Economics' Sasheer Zamata has been cast as Devil Cat, The Boys' Abraham Lin and Cloak & Dagger's Ally Maki will be playing a pair of siblings, and Lucy Liu will be playing their mother.

"It's all true!" Liu wrote on Instagram. "@theoatmeal @shanekosakowski reinvent adult animation with their new @netflix series #ExplodingKittens ! My hysterical cast-mates make me laugh til I cry."

"Very excited to be part of the new Netflix animated comedy series, Exploding Kittens - produced by comedy legends Mike Judge and Greg Daniels!!!!!" Ellis added.

What We Do in the Shadows (the TV series) star Mark Proksch has also been cast in an unknown role.

The Exploding Kittens game debuted in 2015 after a hugely successful Kickstarter campaign, and has released a few expansions since then.

It's had app versions on smartphones and Nintendo Switch, with this new one expected to launch next month.

The new version of the game is expected have no additional fees or in-app purchases, but you will need to log in with a Netflix subscriber account to play.

That's quite the cast, and we're intrigued to see how it will turn out.

The series isn't expected to debut until 2023, so it might be a while until we see just how they're going to adapt a card game into a show.

Lucifer seasons 4-6 are streaming now on Netflix. You can also catch up on seasons 1-4 via Amazon.
