Among the rising targets to watch this spring for second-year head coach Steve Sarkisian and his staff for the 2023 Texas football recruiting class is the under-the-radar three-star Jacksonville athlete Devin McCuin. As one of the more underrated recent visiting recruits for Texas, McCuin is quickly becoming a main target to watch on the trail this spring.

McCuin confirmed via his Twitter timeline on April 15 that he in fact was visiting Texas this weekend. In his first major unofficial visit of the calendar year, McCuin sounds like he got a solid impression of the Longhorns staff in the last couple of days.

One of the interesting facets of the recruitment of McCuin by the Longhorns staff is the fact that the former TCU Horned Frogs longtime head coach Gary Patterson is directly involved. Along with second-year safeties coach Blake Gideon, Patterson and the Longhorns are seemingly making a pretty big push for McCuin out of nowhere.

Moreover, it sounds like Gideon and Patterson were two of the coaches that McCuin was commonly connecting with during his visit. And given the fact that McCuin has a prior connection with Patterson since his brother (redshirt sophomore defensive back Deshawn McCuin) plays for the Horned Frogs, it makes sense that there is some quick traction between him and the Longhorns staff.

It also appears that Gideon is doing a good job as one of the top recruiters pursuing McCuin of late. Gideon has largely found his stride on the recruiting trail since late last cycle. Texas has landed roughly a half-dozen blue-chip commits to play in the defensive backfield since early last offseason.

Texas has yet to officially offer McCuin. But if this connection between him and the Texas coaching staff continues to build throughout the rest of the spring, an offer could be coming very soon.

Some of the other schools to watch in the recruitment of McCuin are the UTSA Roadrunners, North Texas Mean Green, and TCU. It looks like UTSA could be set to get another visit from McCuin at least by the summer. He’s also likely planning a visit with new head coach Sonny Dykes and the Horned Frogs for later this spring.

Texas currently holds commitments from three recruits in the 2023 class, with the latest coming from the potent three-star North Crowley linebacker S’Maje Burrell. With the Longhorns adding McCuin to the list of rising defensive backs to watch for the 2023 recruiting class, it appears that the secondary is still a priority for this staff.
