Des Moines, Iowa — Friday, April 15, 2022 — 

Today, City Engineer Steve Naber announced that the 2^nd Avenue and Birdland Drive Bridges will be completely shut down starting this afternoon.

“We understand this closure is impactful to 2^nd Avenue travelers,” City Engineer Steve Naber said. “Structural engineers and the contractor are working to reinforce and reopen the east half of the bridge, estimating the east half of the bridge could be reopened back to one lane of traffic in each direction within two to four weeks.”

During the removal of the west half of the 2^nd Avenue Bridge over Birdland Drive on Friday, April 15^th, the construction contractor inadvertently removed portions of the reinforcement for the east half of the bridge. During the closure, all 2^nd Avenue traffic intending to cross the 2^nd Avenue Bridge over Birdland Drive will be temporarily detoured using Euclid Avenue, East 14^th Street, and University Avenue.
