LBSU Competes at Pacific Coast Invitational, Bryan Clay Invitational Day Two

Several PCI meet records were set on Thursday with Scimia leading a pair of distance runners in Azusa, Calif.

LONG BEACH, Calif. – The Beach hosted their first of two meets this week with the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate on Thursday. Several meet records were broken, including the women's Triple Jump by Crystal Washington.
 
Washington continues to dominate women's Triple Jump. Picking up the victory over a field of 22, the senior launched herself 12.76m (41-10.5) to set a new PCI record. It surpasses the previous mark set back in 2018 by almost a full foot.
 
The jumpers as a whole had a great day on Thursday. Jason Smith finished third overall and first among Big West competitors with a clearance of 2.06m (6-9) in the men's High Jump. In women's High Jump, Calista Apostol led the conference athletes with a 1.61m (5-3.25) jump.
 
Tayah DeSousa posted a top ten finish in women's Long Jump with a mark of 5.74m (18-10), tops among Big West competition. Cyprus Rice wrapped up the jumps with a new lifetime-best clearance of 4.91m (16-1.75) which was also number one among the conference competitors.
 
The trio of men's throwers all finished top ten in the men's Discus and were 1-2-3 among the Big West. Charlie Vernoy led the way with a new season-best 58.15m (190-9) followed by Alec Jones (184-10) and Sebastian Coleman (181-6). Pablo Gamez also ranked tops in the conference in men's Hammer with a throw of 56.18m (184-4).
 
Out on the track, the men's sprinters led the way. Malik Harness finished sixth overall in the men's 100m posting a 10.73 while Justin Watterson and Anthony Palumbo were in the top ten in the men's 200m. Both notched new lifetime-bests with Watterson posting a time of 21.94 and Palumbo crossing the line in 22 seconds flat.
 
Out in Azusa, Calif. the Beach had a pair of athletes competing in the 5000m race. Allie Scimia set a new lifetime-best with a time of 16:57.27 which ranks eighth fastest in Long Beach State history. For the men, Raymon Ornelas finished 20th with a mark of 14:54.96.
 
Long Beach State will compete in three meets tomorrow, including hosting the first of the prestigious Beach Invitational.
