MT AIRY — The Habersham Central girls won a thrilling defensive battle 1-0 over Kennesaw Mountain on Thursday in the first round of the Class 6A playoffs at Raider Stadium.
The win for the Lady Raiders (13-4) was one of three for Northeast Georgia area teams on the night as they joined 11 other area schools into the Sweet 16. The Buford girls held off Wheeler in Class 6A as well, 4-0, at home while the Union County girls hammered Therrell 10-0 in Class 2A.
The Flowery Branch boys in Class 4A lost a heartbreaker, 1-0, to Marist on the road as the only other thriller on the night. Lopsided matches dominated the action. Also in Class 4A, the East Hall girls, making their first-ever playoff appearance, will have to wait another year for their first playoff victory after falling 7-0 to No. 2 Marist on the road.
In Class 2A, the Lovett girls demolished Banks County, 11-0, and the Pace Academy girls whipped Rabun County 10-0 as well. The Union County girls, however, used a 10-0 thrashing of Therell to advance. The Riverside Military boys were overwhelmed in an 11-1 loss to Pace Academy.
In the second round, the Buford girls, ranked No. 1 in Class 6A, will play host to No. 8 Glynn Academy on Wednesday while the Habersham Central girls will hit the road against No. 10 Richmond Hill.
The Union County girls will play host to East Laurens on Wednesday in Class 2A.
