61st Street | Tosin Cole And Courtney B. Vance On Their Characters [Exclusive]
This week AMC+ will be releasing the second episode of their legal drama, 61st Street. It is very well known that there are some cities that have had a lot of challenges with police officers. For a variety of reasons, it seems that there is a disconnect between law enforcement and the community. Unfortunately, Chicago is one of these cities and it is the setting of AMC+’s new series.
In 61st Street we meet Moses, played by Tosin Cole. He is ready to make a splash as an athlete at the college level. Unfortunately, he finds himself at the wrong place, at the wrong time. Scared for his safety he ends up in an altercation with a law enforcement officer that leads to his death. With his future seemingly crumbling in front of him, public defender Franklin Roberts takes his case and takes on the complicated Chicago judicial system.
With the release of 61st Street LRM Online‘s Emmanuel Gomez spoke with Tosin Cole and Courtney B. Vance about their roles in the series. Cole tells us about his experience in playing a character like Moses which can spark a lot of emotions. Vance shares with us his love for playing an attorney as he has done it before brilliantly. Here is a synopsis for AMC+’s 61st Street
Moses Johnson, a promising Black high school athlete, gets swept up in the Chicago criminal justice system when he is arrested as a supposed gang member after an officer dies during a drug bust gone wrong. Franklin Roberts, who has promised his wife that he will retire as a public defender, takes on Johnson’s case because he recognizes its potential to upend the entire Chicago judicial system, challenging the institutional racism and endemic corruption at its heart.
The series was informed by deep research into the city’s history, as well as the personal experiences of executive producer-writer J. David Shanks, who grew up as a young Black man on the South Side and later became a Chicago police officer before entering the world of film and TV.
