Kyle Naughton has signed a new deal which will keep him at Swansea City until the end of the 2022-23 season.

The versatile defender, who joined from Tottenham for £5m in 2015, had been due to become a free agent this summer.

Naughton, 33, has made 253 Swansea appearances and has been a key player under head coach Russell Martin, playing 35 games this season.

"As long as we are here there'll always be a place for Kyle Naughton, there's no doubt," Martin told BBC Sport Wales.

"We are so pleased he will be a big part of what we are doing next year. His age is of no concern to us at all.

"We wouldn't want to be here without him. He has a lot of play left in him - he looks great physically. He plays with a real intensity and churns out great physical numbers."

Naughton has spent most of his career playing right-back, but has been deployed at the heart of a back three by Martin.

"A lot of people questioned the position he was playing in the team early on," Martin added.

"We knew how important he would be. He's so mature, intelligent, relaxed but focused. His mentality is brilliant.

"He is well respected by the other players - they appreciate how good he is. They'll speak about him in glowing terms.

"The way we play can be really difficult. You have to be open to being a little bit vulnerable, to make some mistakes, sometimes in front of many thousands of people, which is not easy.

"To overcome that and battle against that and ride through it, he's been incredible."

"When people see him at 33 taking on new ideas, it's so easy to transmit it to the other players."
