Ed Orgeron tells Notre Dame they’ll win national title during visit with sons

During a recent trip up to visit the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, former LSU Tigers head coach Ed Orgeron had some praise to heap on Notre Dame.

In a visit to his successor’s previous place of employment, Ed Orgeron (who previously won a national title with the school he was fired from) decided to go out on a limb and state that the Notre Dame Fighting Irish would win a national title.

Orgeron’s recent trip to visit the Fighting Irish included some pretty high praise for Notre Dame’s head coach Marcus Freeman. Orgeron apparently thinks so highly of Freeman that the former LSU Tigers head coach was was willing to go out of his way to make the bold claim about a national title.

As ESPN’s Heather Dinich writes, Orgeron was visiting Notre Dame with his sons, who are interested in coaching themselves, and he had an opportunity to chat with Notre Dame’s players. During that opportunity, Orgeron spoke highly of Freeman and his coaching staff and then talked about a national title.

“I don’t know when it’s going to happen, but with this staff, and this team, you’re going to win it all,” Orgeron said, according to Dinich.

Interestingly enough, there was a time when Freeman was actually a possible candidate to come in and help improve Orgeron’s coaching staff. As Tyler Horka points out, Freeman declined, ended up at Notre Dame, and is now a head coach at a very prominent college football program.

Meanwhile, Orgeron was paid to leave LSU as the Tigers were struggling on the field and dealing with scandals off of it. And now Orgeron is visiting Freeman during the offseason. It’s weird how life works out.
