Los Angeles Dodgers free agent Jimmie Sherfy signed with the Gastonia Honey Hunters of the Atlantic League, the club announced.

The Dodgers claimed Sherfy on July 13, 2021, and he ended up appearing in four games for L.A. before going on the injured list with elbow inflammation, which ended his season. With the Dodgers, Sherfy pitched 4.1 innings while allowing three runs.

After the 2021 season, the Dodgers outrighted Sherfy off their 40-man roster and he cleared waivers in early November. Sherfy opted against accepting the Minor League assignment and elected free agency.

He had the right to reject it due to previously being outrighted in his career.

The 30-year-old right-hander made his debut with the Arizona Diamondbacks during the 2017 season and pitched parts of three seasons with them. In his time with Arizona, Sherfy threw 45.1 innings with a 2.98 ERA, but in his final season he posted a 5.89 ERA in 18.1 innings.

In 2020, he missed the entire season with an arm injury before he was released.

The following season, Sherfy was signed to a Minor League contract by the San Francisco Giants. In 10 appearances, Sherfy recorded a 4.22 ERA before being designated for assignment on July 6 and being claimed by the Dodgers a week later.

In his Major League career, Sherfy owns a 3.28 ERA, 4.21 FIP, 8.95 strikeouts per nine and 3.13 walks per nine in 60.1 innings. The Thousand Oaks native was originally drafted by the Diamondbacks in the 10th round of the 2013 MLB Draft out of the University of Oregon.

Quartet of Dodgers relievers on similar timetables

The Dodgers placed Tommy Kahnle, Victor González and Caleb Ferguson on the 10-day injured list while optioning Phil Bickford to Triple-A Oklahoma City to begin their season. All but González were expected to miss the start of the season.

Manager Dave Roberts estimates all four relievers will be ready to join the team by the start of May or one week into the month.

However, as of May 2, teams will be required to trim down their active rosters to 26 players and will only be permitted to carry 13 active pitchers.

“Rubber is going to hit the road at some point in time when all those guys are ready to go,” Roberts said.
