Texans center Justin Britt: Assignments will be 'a lot more crystal clear' in new offense

(SportsRadio 610) - It was only the second day of voluntary workouts, but veteran center Justin Britt was already excited to see how offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton would change up what the Texans' offense does.

"The offense is going to be a little different, I know that," Britt said Tuesday at NRG Stadium. "With new coaches, a new OC, different terminology. Everyone’s got a different way they do things. It’s going to be exciting and interesting to see how Pep (Hamilton) kind of takes this and runs with it, because he was on the staff last year. He was in it last year and he knows how he wants to do it, so I think it’s going to be a lot more crystal clear in our assignments. It’s just up to us to go out there and execute it."

The Texans are coming off a season in which they ranked last in rush DVOA, which measures efficiency. They had the fewest rushing yards (1,422), yards per carry (3.4) and the worst rushing first down percentage (18.3).

Houston's offensive line ranked 29th, according to Pro Football Focus, which notes 11 different linemen played at least 58 snaps for the Texans last season, and the ones who played the most graded the worst.

"Five different linemen earned a run-blocking grade lower than 50.0, and the line as a whole earned the worst PFF run-blocking grade (47.4) in the league — the only unit to grade lower than 55.0," writes Sam Monson at PFF.

No matter the scheme, Houston needs better play particularly from its interior offensive linemen, as well as more talent at running back. That's how the Texans get the balanced attack quarterback Davis Mills talked about Tuesday.

The Texans recently signed veteran running back Marlon Mack and Wednesday are visiting with Breece Hall, considered among the top running back prospects in this year's draft.
