A Champaign man is dead after a kayaking incident in Mason County on Sunday.
Illinois Conservation Police (ICP) responded around 4:30 p.m. to a backwater lake at Matanzas Beach for a kayaking fatality.
We're told four people went kayaking and tried to cross while there were high winds and wave activity.
Once they were halfway across, one of them fell out of their kayak when it overturned due to the wind and water conditions.
ICP says he was able to hold onto one of the other kayaks for a little while before the group separated and lost sight of him.
A rescue boat was able to help the kayakers out of the water and they were all taken to a local hospital in Havana.
A 27-year-old Champaign man was pronounced dead by the coroner at the hospital.
The incident is under investigation.
Two of the kayakers are from Champaign and two are from Urbana.
