Today the Mariners announced they’ve invited 32 players to their 2023 Spring Training. Every year, teams invite a group of players not on their 40-man rosters (NRIs, or non-roster invites) to their spring training camps. NRIs are often long-term minor-leaguers getting a crack in a new system, or MLB vets who didn’t sign a big-league free agent contract looking to catch on with a new team; at the other end of the spectrum, they can also be non-40-man prospects being given a test drive against tougher competition to help the team make decisions about placement for next season.

When was the last time the Seattle Mariners had the ace of the AL West?. While Félix Hernández’s heyday is hardly ancient history, the cream of the crop has been reserved for pitchers among the league’s best. In Houston, Justin Verlander, Gerrit Cole, and Zack Greinke. In Texas, Lance Lynn, Mike Minor, and Cole Hamels. In Oakland, Frankie Montas, Chris Bassitt, In Anaheim, Shohei Ohtani and, well, look Ohtani’s real good. Not since 2015 have the M’s had a pitcher in the Top-10 in WAR in the American League, the last year of the King’s reign in earnest.

Evan White. For some, the name of the Gold Glove-winning first baseman can evoke feelings of joy, of hope. For others, the name of the oft-injured, yet to prove himself as a major league hitter can evoke dread, or weariness. Whichever side of the spectrum you may fall on, I am going to ask you to let go of those feelings, to clear your mind of the Evan White you know. Because the truth is, much like the cat of Schrödinger fame, we cannot know what Evan White is until we open the box that is the 2023 season, or at the very least this year’s spring training. He may finally break out with the bat in a way that forces his way into the lineup, or his health struggles could continue and we may never know what could have been otherwise. There are signs pointing in either direction, so the best thing to do is to approach 2023 Evan White with an emotional clean slate.
