Businesses plead for help amid homeless crisis

Santa Monica High School held its 169th Graduation Exercises on Thursday, June 8 in the Memorial Greek Theatre. The Class of 2023 were celebrated for overcoming the pandemic-induced zoom-school era that marked the start of their high school careers and was encouraged to go forth and embrace the new challenges ahead of them. In a devastating turn of events, Michael Shelton, a 33-year-old resident of Santa Monica has been hospitalized in Italy after a tragic accident. Shelton was visiting Italy for a friend’s wedding on May 23, when he fell off a 65-foot cliff while descending a steep set of stairs in Positano. The incident left him with severe injuries, including broken legs, broken ribs, head trauma, chest trauma, cervical trauma, lung contusions, and internal bleeding.

The Deputy Under Secretary of the Army, Mario A. Diaz, along with a number of other high-ranking veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces, visited Santa Monica College (SMC) on Monday to tour the Veterans Success Center and learn about the many educational opportunities that are provided to make college affordable for student veterans.

Vandalism and burglary: In the course of regular business this week, SMDP staff encountered seven businesses that had been vandalized recently. Damage included two burned-out ATMs at the Chase location in Downtown Santa Monica and multiple instances of broken glass doors on several businesses. According to the Santa Monica Police Department broken windows in isolation would be considered vandalism. Vandalism calls increased from 607 in 2018 to 757 in 2021. Calls declined slightly last year to 746 and in the first quarter of this year SMPD reported 175 instances compared to 182 in 2022. However, if the suspect enters the building after breaking the glass, the call becomes burglary, regardless of any actual theft. Burglary declined from 740 calls in 2021 to 669 calls in 2022. However, in the first quarter of this year, burglary (both residential and non residential) increased to 180 calls from the 163 in the same time last year.
