Ryan Weathers was roughed up in his first start of the season.

Triple-A El Paso still had enough resilience to win a third straight game to start the season.

The 22-year-old left-hander allowed five runs while recording just one out in the first inning, but the Chihuahuas rallied for an 8-7 win on Thursday at Round Rock.

Right fielder Trayce Thompson (1.616 OPS) drove in two runs on three hits, including two doubles.

Left fielder Taylor Kohlwey (1.100 OPS) went 1-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and two walks and catcher Webster Rivas (1.657 OPS) went 1-for-2 with a double, three walks an a run scored.

Shortstop C.J. Hinojosa (.777 OPS) went 1-for-3 with a double, two walks and two runs scored.

The late rally salvaged a game that began with Weathers failing to get out of the first inning in an outing reminiscent of a second half in the majors in which he allowed 52 hits, including 12 homers, and 12 walks over 36 innings (9.25 ERA).

On Thursday, Weathers, optioned to Triple-A El Paso over the weekend, struck out one, walked three and allowed three hits, including a pair of doubles, before he was pulled from the game.

The El Paso bullpen allowed just two runs over the final 8 2/3 innings, with left-hander Travis Bergen (1-0, 0.00) earning the win with a scoreless 1 1/3 innings and right-hander Grant Gavin (3.00) surviving two hits in the ninth to record his first save.

El Paso is 3-0.

The rest of the Padres system begins play Friday.
