Tornados and severe storms swept through the area Tuesday and Wednesday of this week, wreaking havoc on several local communities. Tuesday’s tornado devastated parts of Emanuel County with roofs being blown off some buildings in the downtown Swainsboro area, along with some destruction in the Treutlen County area.

Wednesday was a repeat performance. In the City of Kite in Emanuel County Wednesday night, buildings were destroyed, and trees strewn about.

No deaths or serious injuries were reported locally, but one person died as a result of a tornado that ripped through Pembroke and Ellabell Tuesday.

In Toombs and Montgomery counties, while conditions were threatening, they could have been much worse. Toombs County Emergency Management Agency Director Lynn Moore said Thursday morning that Wednesday night’s storms left some tree damage, taking power lines down and causing power outages for numerous customers. Most of those trees, Moore reported, were in the Normantown area.

Moore said that a tornado did touch down in the South Thompson area causing minimal damage to an individual’s shop, but all residents in the area were unscathed. Small debris about the county was also reported.

Donnie Daniels, EMA Director in Montgomery County, noted that the fire department and road department removed about 30 trees from Montgomery County roadways. Daniels said those trees also brought down power lines, and Altamaha EMC had to work to remove the trees to restore power to homes.
