Through the first two games of the Triple-A Tacoma Rainiers‘ season, outfielder Taylor Trammell has erupted for a massive home run, laser double, and 4 RBIs, while aiding the Rainiers to a title-defending win in their opening game on Tuesday.

Trammell, acquired from the Padres in late 2020 as part of the infamous Austin Nola-Ty France trade, played in 51 games for the Mariners last season, but spent the majority of the year in Tacoma while fellow prospect Jarred Kelenic was given time to develop in the major leagues. Trammell had a shot to make the M’s Opening Day roster this year, but top prospect Julio Rodriguez showed out and left no doubt for his case to be the final outfielder on the roster.

The Seattle Mariners have a plethora of talented outfielders already on their major league roster, but Taylor Trammell wants to prove he should be a part of that group.

Once a Top-100 prospect in MLB, Taylor Trammell has always had an eye-popping skillset; he has a powerful left-handed swing capable of producing a multitude of doubles and home runs over the course of a full season, and has the range to capably play center field at the major league level. However, he wasn’t able to showcase consistent contact or reach base enough in Seattle last season to merit significant playing time in the majors.

With Rodriguez, Jesse Winker, Jarred Kelenic, and Mitch Haniger slated to be everyday players for the Mariners this season, Trammell’s path to the big leagues likely hinges on utility man Dylan Moore’s performance; Seattle highly values Moore for his ability to play all over the field and for his speed, but there’s no guarantee he will be able to produce enough offensively to stay on the roster all season.

If Moore starts slow and Trammell stays hot, we could see the two swap places – especially if Seattle ends up yearning for a power lefty bat off the bench.
