NEW YORK — The Red Sox’s 2022 Opening Day roster is set. The final bench spots go to Travis Shaw and Jonathan Araúz.
The final bullpen spots go to Hansel Robles and Phillips Valdez.
Righty Tyler Danish has been optioned to Triple-A Worcester.
Eduard Bazardo and Ralph Garza Jr. have been designated for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster for Shaw and Robles.
The Red Sox selected Shaw onto the 40-man roster after he signed as a minor league free agent during spring training. Shaw went just 4-for-24 (.167 batting average) with one extra-base hit during camp. The first baseman provides a left-handed hitting option off the bench.
The Red Sox selected Danish onto 40-man roster Monday with no guarantee he would make the Opening Day roster. Danish, a 27-year-old righty, was a White Sox’s second round pick in the 2013 Draft. He pitched 13 innings in the major leagues for the White Sox from 2016-18, allowing seven runs (4.85 ERA). He pitched in Indy Ball in both 2019 and ‘20.
Robles always was guaranteed a spot whenever he was ready to pitch. He arrived at camp late because of a visa delay and made only two appearances in Grapefruit League games (the final two games). But the Red Sox feel he’s ready without getting some extra work in at Worcester.
The Red Sox open against the Yankees at 1:05 p.m. Friday at Yankee Stadium. Nathan Eovaldi will start for Boston opposite Yankees ace Gerrit Cole.
The opener initially was scheduled for Thursday (today) but it was postponed due to inclement weather.
