Jonas Kaufmann, Malin Byström, Lise Davidsen, Ailyn Pérez, Juan Diego Flórez Headline Royal Opera House’s 2022-23 Season

The Royal Opera House has announced its 2022-23 season which will feature 20 new productions, nine world premieres, and three UK premieres.

Our focus will be solely on the operatic productions the company will be showcasing.

The season opens with Mozart’s “Don Giovanni” in a production by Kasper Holten. Constantin Trinks conducts a cast starring Luca Micheletti, Christopher Maltman, Maria Bengstsson, Paula Murrihy, Charles Castronovo, Christina Gansch, Thomas Faulkner, and Adam Palka.

Performance Dates: Sept. 8-26, 2022

Sir David McVicar directs “Salome” with Malin Byström, Jordan Shanahan, Stefan Margita, Katarina Dalayman, Thomas Atkins, and Annika Schlict headlining the cast. Alexander Soddy conducts.

Performance Dates: Sept. 9 – Oct 1, 2022

Maria Agresta and Lianna Haroutounian share the title role of “Madama Butterfly” in a production by Moshe Leiser and Patrice Caurier. Nicola Luisotti conducts a cast starring Joshua Guerrero, Carlos Álvarez, Gyula Nagy, Christine Rice, Kseniia Nikolaieva, and Carlo Bosi.

Performance Dates: Sept. 12 – Oct. 1, 2022

“Aida” will star Elena Stikhina, Angela Blue, Francesco Meli, Agnieszka Rehlis, Elina Garanca, Olesya Petrova, Ludovic Tézier, Dimitri Platanias, Solomon Howard, In Sung Sim, James Platt, and Blaise Malaba. Antonio Pappano and Mark Elder share conducting duties.

Performance Dates: Sept. 25 – Oct. 12, 2022

The company will present the world premiere of “Last Days” which will feature music by Oliver Leith and text by Matt Copson. Matt Copson and Ann Morrissey will co-direct

Performance Dates: Oct. 7-11, 2022 

“La Bohème” will star Ailyn Pérez, Aida Garifullina, Anna Princeva, Juan Diego Flórez, Freddie De Tommaso, David Junghoon Kim, Stefan Pop, Andrey Zhilikhovsky Lukasz Golinski, Bogdan Baciu, Danielle de Niese, Lucy Crowe, and Simona Mihai, among others. Kevin John Edusei, Evelino Pidò, and Paul Wynne Griffiths conduct.

Performance Dates: Oct. 14- Nov. 17, 2022

Lisette Oropesa, Emily D’Angelo, Mary Bevan, Varduhi Abrahamyan, Robert Charlesworth, and José Coca Loza will headline “Alcina.” Christian Curnyn conducts the production by Richard Jones.

Performance Dates: Nov. 8-24, 2022 

Corinna Niemeyer will lead a production of “The Rape of Lucretia” at the Linbury Theatre. Oliver Mears directs.

Performance Dates: Nov. 13-22, 2022

Malin Byström and Natalya Romaniw will star as “Tosca” in a production by Jonathan Kent. Gywn Hughes Jones, Freddie De Tommaso, Gabriele Viviani, Erwin Schrott, Josef Jeongmeen Ahn, Jeremy White, and Hubert Francis also star. Daniel Oren conducts.

Performance Dates: Nov. 28 – Dec. 21, 2022

Anna Prohaska, Jacqueline Stucker, Filipe Manu, Long Long, Gyula Orendt, Leon Kosavic, Nina Minasyan, Kathryn Lewek, Aleksandra Olcyzk, Brindley Sherratt, Renée Pape headline “Die Zauberflöte” in a production by Sir David McVicar. Maxim Emelyanchev and Richard Hetherington conduct.

Performance Dates: Dec. 16, 2022 – Jan. 28, 2023

The company will host the U.K. premiere of “Least Like the Other” in collaboration with the Irish National Opera.

Performance Dates: Jan. 15 – 19, 2023 

Lise Davidsen, Stefan Vinke, Gerald Finley, Ekaterina Gubanova, and Ewa Plonka headline “Tannhäuser.” Sebastian Weigle conducts the production by Tim Albery.

Performance Dates: Jan. 29 – Feb. 16, 2023

“Il Barbiere di Siviglia” will star Aigul Akhmetshina, Andrzej Filonczyk, Lawrence Brownlee, Konu Kim, Bryn Terfel, and Fabio Capitanucci. Rafael Payare and Christopher Willis conduct.

Performance Dates: Feb. 2 – March 6, 2023

Asmik Grigorian, David Butt Philip, Matthew Rose, Emma Bell, Sarah Connolly, Ross Ramgobin, and Hongni Wu will star in “Rusalka.” Semyon Bychkov conducts a production by Natalie Abrahami and Ann Yee.

Performance Dates: Feb. 21 – March 7, 2023

Anna Pirozzi, Yonghoon Lee, Russell Thomas, Masabane Cecilia Rangwanasha, and Ermonela Jaho star in “Turandot.” Antonio Pappano and Paul Wynne Griffiths alternate conducting duties in a production by Andrei Serban.

Performance Dates: March 10 – April 13, 2023

Kaija Saariaho’s “Innocence” will have its U.K. premiere in a production by Simon Stone. Susanna Mälkki conducts a cast starring Jenny Carlstedt, Sandrine Piau, Christopher Purves, Lilian Farahani, and Markus Nykänen.

Performance Dates: April 17 – May 4, 2023 

The Jette Parker Artists will perform “Arminio.” The cast includes Gabriele Kupsyte, Sarah Dufresne, Isabelle Peters, Kamila Dunstan, Josef Jeongmeen Ahn, and Michael Gibson.

Performance Dates: April 20 – May 6, 2023

Christian Gerhaher, Anja Kampe, Peter Hoare, Brindley Sherratt, and Clay Hilley star in “Wozzeck.” Antonio Pappano conducts the production by Deborah Warner.

Performance Dates: May 19 – June 7, 2023

Rachel Willis-Sørensen, Yusif Eyvazov, Gregory Kunde, Ludovic Tézier, Jamie Barton, and Roberto Tagliavini star in “Il Trovatore.” Antonio Pappano conducts.

Performance Dates: June 2 – July 2, 2023 

Jonas Kaufmann, Aigul Akhmetshina, Sarah Gilford, and Gordon Bintner star in “Werther.” Antonio Pappano conducts.

Performance Dates: June 20 – July 14, 2023

“Woman at Point Zero” will get its U.K. premiere in a production by Laila Soliman. The multimedia opera by Bushra El-Turk and Stacy Hardy will be conducted by Kanako Abe.

Performance Dates: June 28 – 30, 2023

Brian Jagde, Lise Davidsen, Luca Micheletti, Yulia Matochkina, and John Relyea star in “Don Carlo.” Daniele Rustioni conducts.

Performance Dates: June 30 – July 15, 2023

The Royal Opera will present a new production of “History of the Present” directed by Jude Christian and composed by Annea Lockwood.

Mattia Olivieri, Siobhan Stagg, Stéphane Degout, Hrachuní Bassénz, and Anna Stéphany star in “Le Nozze di Figaro.” Joana Mallwitz conducts.

Performance Dates: July 8 – 22, 2023

Kristina Mkhitaryan, Liparit Avetisyan, and Christopher Pohl headline “La Traviata.” Keri-Lynn Wilson conducts the iconic production by Richard Eyre.

Performance Dates: July 10 – 23, 2023

Concerts

The newest members of the Jette Parker Artists, Canadian soprano Sarah Dufresne, Lithuanian mezzo-soprano Gabrielė Kupšytė, Scottish tenor Michael Gibson, and Korean baritone Josef Jeongmeen Ahn, will perform their favorite songs and arias.

Performance Dates: Sept. 23, 2022 

The Jette Parker Artists will also put on a summer performance to close out the season.
