For more than 40 years, Gregory Wert was a part of the experience at Wert’s Café in Allentown, the restaurant started by his parents.
The café will be closed for a week in mourning after the 59-year-old died Saturday.
“We lost our Greg unexpectedly last night. We are extremely devastated,” the cafe said that morning on its Facebook page. Follow-up posts shared his obituary, thanked well-wishers and announced the temporary closure through next weekend.
The history section on the Wert’s Café website describes its opening by Fred and Connie Wert in 1968, and how over the years the staff grew to include their three children, Greg, Phil and Kathy. The spot is popular for its burgers.
Greg Wert’s obituary describes his “contagious laugh (that) could be heard for hours” at the family business and “his beautiful smile and friendly personality” that was “the first thing you encountered when entering the restaurant.”
He is survived by his parents, brother, sister, wife, son and nieces.
A viewing is scheduled for 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Stephens Funeral Home, 274 N. Krocks Road in Allentown. A second viewing will be held there at 9 a.m. Thursday followed by a service at 10.
