Manager Bud Black confirmed Sunday that Nunez will make the Rockies' Opening Day roster as the team's backup catcher, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports.

Nunez secured his spot after the Rockies reassigned his main competition for the role -- Carlos Perez and Brian Serven -- to their minor-league camp Sunday. Black lauded Nunez for his power and on-base skills, but a 34.6 percent strikeout rate in 2021 limited the impact of the 27-year-old's overall offensive output. Nunez will likely pick up anywhere from one to three starts per week while top backstop Elias Diaz is healthy.
