BISMARCK, N.D. (KFYR) - Sen. John Hoeven earned the NDGOP nomination Saturday, defeating state Rep. Rick Becker by a vote of 1,224 to 1,037 at the NDGOP convention.

More than 2,300 delegates were in attendance, making this the largest GOP convention in state history. Eight statewide offices looked for endorsements at this year’s convention. The only challenge was for U.S. Senator, in which incumbent U.S. Senator John Hoeven was challenged for his seat by State Representative Rick Becker.

“I’m passionate about putting North Dakota first. I’m passionate about liberty. I’m passionate about property rights, Second Amendment rights, free-speech. I’m passionate about a free market that maximizes prosperity for everyone. I’m passionate in the sense that I fight for these things, I introduce legislation, I make bold, truthful statements and sometimes this passion makes headlines,” said Becker.

“Now, in all these areas, with every decision, when I’m down there working for you, when I’m voting, I don’t sit around and think, ‘Gee, what kind of rating am I gonna get from some Washington, D.C. group based on this vote.’ I do what’s good for North Dakota,” said Sen. John Hoeven.

Earlier in the day, delegates called a vote for convention chair, rather than simply confirming NDGOP chairman Perrie Schafer as chair of the convention, which is usually a minor procedural matter. That caused the convention to last longer than expected. Becker has said he will honor the convention results and won’t run in the primary.
