Gov. Jim Justice and his beloved Babydog attended the West Virginia Home Show Friday, where the governor signed into law a bill that encourages construction of new housing.
The bill, called the BUILD WV Act, was sponsored by Del. Doug Skaff, D-Kanawha.
“We do this to attract businesses here and people to West Virginia," Skaff said. "This bill will help us build affordable homes for all people."
House Bill 4502 encourages the development of residential housing in the Mountain State. It includes three types of tax credits to encourage housing developers to build homes. Developers apply for the tax credits through the state's Economic Development Department.
Tim Cunningham, chairman of the Home Show, said the new law will be helpful for those looking to build a home or those doing the building.
“It helps the builders, helps the suppliers and helps you all as homeowners," Cunningham said.
From material cost to tax incentives, the legislation aims to provide economic growth and strengthen communities for West Virginia.
"Builders need some help with inflation cost its through the roof when it comes to materials," Skaff said. "Anything we can do to help provide some tax relief to the builders and the developers. Let's develop West Virginia together."
The bill goes into effect June 10.
