The Grundy County softball team dropped its sixth game in a row last Thursday with a 10-0 loss at Van Buren County.
The Lady Jackets (0-6) were shut out for the fifth time and held to just three hits in the loss to the Eagles. Lacie Woodlee, Keeley Kantack and Kathryn Lusk each tallied hits, but the trio of bats was not enough to produce the season’s first win.
Head coach Monte Meeks hopes the team’s spring break will give the squad some time to rest and regroup before entering district play.
“We’ve had a rough start, but we didn’t schedule any games during the break,” Meeks said. “Hopefully the time off will give the girls the chance to get their heads right and get back to the field with some confidence.”
Meeks and his staff are looking to turn around the program that has struggled over the past few years.
“The coaches and I are trying to get the team to buy into our system,” Meeks said. “We have some great talent, but they’ve had a bad couple of years. We’re trying to instill some discipline, grit and determination that’s been missing. It’s a process, but our goal this year is to be better than we were the game before.”
Thus far, the Lady Jackets have scored just two runs for the season. Woodlee drove in the year’s lone run in a 13-1 loss at Sequatchie County last week. Meeks is counting on Woodlee and her fellow seniors to help right a ship that has experienced choppy waters in recent seasons.
“We have five seniors in Woodlee, Jenna Helton, Kendal Winton, Maddy Shrum and Olivia Nunley,” Meeks said. “We have four juniors, and then we have a group of sophomores and freshmen who we’re hoping will gain a lot of experience this season. A lot have never played fastpitch softball, so we’re looking to get them in the mix and get a few games under their belts.”
GCHS aims for its first win Monday when it hosts Van Buren County at 5 p.m. The Lady Jackets then visit Forrest High School on Tuesday for their first district game of the year. First pitch in Chapel Hill is set for 5:30 p.m.
“We have a lot of great kids on this team who love the game,” Meeks said. “They’re all very hard workers and give it their all during practice. They just haven’t been able to reap the benefits of it yet, but we’re headed in the right direction.”
