The Newsom administration is a partnership with the Commission on Asian and Pacific Islander American Affairs and the California Asian and Pacific Islander Legislative Caucus to distribute a total of $14 million in grants to organizations throughout California that provide services and support to victims of hate crimes, Governor Newsom's office said in a release.

"This is a critical investment that will go a long way towards uplifting our communities and fighting hate and violence around the state," Governor Newsom said in the release. "We aim to help victims of violence, but also prevent violence in the future. History shows we need to do better, and this helps us get there."

The funding is part of Newsom's California Comeback plan he approved last year. The $166.5 million that was approved will be allocated to "bias-motivated attacks," which include hate crimes against Asian American and Pacific Islander communities.

The California Department of Social Services will provide funding to five leading organizations and will work with 75 other organizations to provide services, the release stated.

"State investment in the Asian American Pacific Islander community is long overdue," Assemblymember Phil Ting (D-San Francisco) said in the release. "It's gratifying to see an initial round of grants go to deserving organizations committed to carrying out the important work of stopping AAPI hate."

The California State Library is giving $10 million for "grants to ethnic media organizations" to promote anti-hate services and programs as well as community support and cross-racial understanding, according to the release.

The Governor's office said the $14 million is just the first round of the total $30 million that was designated this year for these services. In the next couple of weeks, more grants will be allocated to support anti-hate organizations.
