David Wright was asked to speak after a Mets hitters meeting on Thursday, and as he scanned the room of new faces making up the team’s retooled roster, the former captain had only one thought.

“I was just like, ‘I wish I could be in this lineup,’” Wright said. “They’re gonna score some runs. They’ve got guys that can grind out at-bats, got guys that can hit home runs.”

New York, looking to reach its first World Series since Wright was nearing the end of his storied career in 2015, added Starling Marte, Mark Canha, and Eduardo Escobar to their lineup, while bringing back Robinson Cano from a season-long PED suspension. Adding that talent to Pete Alonso, Francisco Lindor, Brandon Nimmo, and a healthy Dominic Smith, and Wright thinks you get what should be one of the best lineups in the league.

“They’re loaded with talent, that’s for sure,” Wright said. “Just looking around that room, it’s All-Star, All-Star, soon-to-be All-Star, just around the room. It’s pretty wild.

“I’d be surprised if they’re not one of the top offensive teams in the league.”

If the Mets produced a top-tier offense this season, they would truly be one of the top teams in the league, considering they would be pairing it with arguably the best rotation in all of baseball. But one of the franchise’s most beloved players is clearly excited for the season to get going next week.
