Golden Apple Award: Tyler Roberts, Meigs County High School
DECATUR, TN (WDEF) – The best teachers know how to listen and encourage. As a teacher and coach at Meigs County High, Tyler Roberts displays both those skills on a daily basis. He is quick to praise his student’s accomplishments, and he stays in close contact with their parents.
Principal John Grissom says, “Coach Roberts is one of a kind. He’s a top notch guy, and he does everything 100 percent of the time, and he is all Meigs County.
When asked to describe himself, Roberts says, “Tyler Roberts is a God-fearing man, loves the lord. I find that teaching kids is the greatest calling that anyone could have, and to be their coach in a competitive sport, is awesome.”
He continues, “I would like to think that I have several people that have inspired me to be teachers. My dad was a teacher his entire life, and went on to be in administration. He’s been a big influence in my life. Also a man by the name of Sonny Woodcock who was a biology teacher, and he was an influence on the coaching side, because he really showed that you can be a coach and be a really good teacher as well. I love baseball. I love being able to have a positive influence on these young men, but I also really push them academically, because they are always a student athlete first.”
Senior Jackson Shaver chips in, “I really just wrote the letter because I really look up to coach Roberts. He pushes us to be the best we can be, and he’s a very Godly man, and I like that.”
Senior Matthew Boshears adds, “If you’re doing bad then he’ll let you know, but if you’re doing great he’ll be the first one to tell you, you’re doing great, and that’s what I really like about coach Tyler.”
Senior Logan Carroll says, “If we ever text him on a weekend or at night, he’ll always text back right away, and he’s honestly looking out for us throughout the day.”
Senior Connor Mason says,”And he’s a Godly man. Every Wednesday we have like prayer groups. If anything is going on in your home life he’s there for you. If you need absolutely anything, he’s the man you go to for us.”
Junior Payton Armour says,”He’s allowed me to become one of the best players that I can be, and without him, you know, I don’t know if I’d be as good as I am.”
Tyler concludes, “I’m thankful to have this job. I’m thankful for Meigs County Board of Education for allowing me to have this this opportunity to to be a hometown boy, and teach here in my home school, and hopefully make a difference, because that’s why I’m here, to make a positive difference in these young men and young ladies lives.”
