The Coronado boys golf team won the District 1-6A championship on Tuesday.

Coronado's Ryan Lewis has the pedigree to be a successful golfer.

His father, Tommy, was a talented golfer having played at UTEP from 1992-97 and who spent some time playing professionally.

On Tuesday, Ryan Lewis won his first district title in the wind-shortened District 1-6A tournament at the Butterfield Trail Golf Club. Tuesday's second and final round was shortened to nine holes after strong winds hit the El Paso area for much of the afternoon and into the evening.

On Monday, Lewis shot a 2-under, 70 and finished the 27-hole tournament with a 113.

"On Monday, I was consistent and played," Lewis said. "My ball striking has been a plus in my career and it was nice to win a district title after finishing second a couple of times before."

Local golf fans will get acquainted with Lewis in the next few years. He has verbally committed to UTEP.

"Playing golf at the college level is something that was a goal of mine and I'm looking forward to the challenge," Lewis said. "It'll be a new challenge. But I have the regional tournament coming up and my goal is to get to state."

Lewis' teammate, Cayle Beltran, finished tied for second with Eastwood's Javier Delgadillo. Both finished with a 115. Coronado won the team title with a 466 and Eastwood was second with a 494.

Girls

Eastwood sophomore golfer Kelly Peden won her first district title with a 27-hole total of 120. Peden shot an impressive 78 in Monday's first round and had a four-shot lead headed into the final day. On Tuesday her nine-hole score of 42 was the best round of the day.

"It's a good win and I feel like I'm playing pretty well. I really enjoy the competition," Peden said. "I've had some good tournaments out of town and I value traveling with the team. Getting experience at different courses and playing against top players has helped me grow."

Peden finished eight strokes ahead of Coronado's Kynlee Stubbs, who shot a 128.

The Coronado girls golf team won the District 1-6A championship on Tuesday.
