Fight over wig leads to shooting in Whitehaven

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Memphis hairdresser is facing a serious charge after allegedly fighting one of her customers over a wig.

Police say the incident happened Saturday afternoon at an apartment complex on Airways near Shelby Drive. Investigators say the fight started with fists but ended with bullets when the hairdresser, Artavia Bynum, fired two shots at the customer after the customer threw a water bottle at Bynum.

Police say Bynum fired the shots as the customer was getting into her car. She wasn’t hit but one of the bullets hit her driver’s side door.

Markavian Isom said he was pulling into the parking lot when the shots rang out.

“I got to ducking. I was real scared,” Isom said. “I thought I had got hit. My arm got real hot but I didn’t get hit though.”

On Monday, police say Bynum turned herself in and admitted to shooting at the customer. Bynum was charged with aggravated assault.

“I ain’t never seen (Artavia) mad,” Isom said. “That’s why it surprised me.”

Bynum is due in court April 5th.
