LEAVENWORTH – Kansas Wesleyan split its doubleheader with the Saint Mary Spires on Friday at the USM Softball field. KWU won the first game 4-0 and dropped the second 3-2.
Anahi Agredano (SO/Anaheim, Calif.) got the Coyotes on the board in the top of the third inning with a double to score Brianna McGinnis (SR/Tucson, Ariz.) who led off the inning with a double.
The Coyotes added a run in the fourth when Mia Hernandez (FR/Hanford, Calif.) singled then later scored on a double steal attempt by the Coyotes.
Wesleyan took advantage of a Saint Mary error in the sixth to score two runs. After an error on a foul ball to extend the at bat, Lauren Blue (SR/Arlington, Texas) doubled to score Brylee Potter (FR/Strong City, Kan.) who was pinch running. Then McGinnis reached on an error that allowed Blue to score and put the Coyotes up 4-0.
Carmen Angulo (SR/Long Beach, Calif.) was masterful for the Coyotes in the circle, holding Saint Mary to three hits while striking out eight and allowed no walks.
The Coyotes took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second of game two, when Elizabeth Willison (SO/Moore, Okla.) singled and later scored in Vivian Millan (SO/Grand Prairie, Texas)'s single.
Saint Mary would tie it in the bottom of the third and added single tallies in the fifth and sixth to take a 3-1 lead.
Wesleyan tried to rally, as Bailey Rivas (SO/West Covina, Calif.) walked and then scored on McGinnis's triple, but the Coyotes couldn't get the game-tying run across.
Millan had two of KWU's eight hits as the Coyotes out-hit Saint Mary 8-5 in the game.
