Newcastle United made quite a splash in the January transfer window by bringing in multiple players, and they have had the desired effect as well. Back then, The Magpies were fighting relegation but now, it looks like they have a chance of even finishing in the top ten of the Premier League if they can keep up their form. In fact, Eddie Howe’s side have one of the most consistent in Europe since the turn of the year.

Thus, while Newcastle United must be delighted with the moves that they made in January, it looks like there is one player that they missed out on.

That player is none other than Georginio Wijnaldum, who has established himself as one of the top midfielders in the world since leaving Newcastle United in 2016 for Liverpool but it is safe to say that his spell at Paris Saint-Germain has not gone as expected till now.

It looks like Newcastle United had an eye on a potential Wijnaldum return in January as well but he ended up staying in Paris, with their presence in the Champions League playing a part in the decision. As reported by Football FanCast, journalist Pete O’Rourke said:

"“Newcastle were interested in Wijnaldum in January, they did look at him, but the player decided to stay at PSG with them competing in the Champions League.”"

Wijnaldum decided to stay at PSG despite interest from Newcastle United in January

It goes without saying that Wijnaldum has had a difficult time at PSG, struggling to establish himself in their first-team.

Also, their Champions League campaign came to an end at the hands of Real Madrid, as they French side crumbled in the second leg of the tie away in Spain.

It is very possible that Wijnaldum could end up departing the club in the not too distant future if things don’t improve. The Dutchman is 31 years of age though. Thus, does it make sense for Newcastle United to make a move?
