The Boston Red Sox made another spring training roster cut Friday. They optioned top pitching prospect Brayan Bello to Triple-A Worcester.
Bello still could start the season at Double-A Portland despite being optioned to Worcester.
The hard-throwing righty, who will turn 23 in May, was added to Boston’s 40-man roster in November. He went 7-3 with a 3.87 ERA and 1.28 WHIP in 21 starts combined between Greenville and Portland last season, earning 2021 Red Sox minor league Pitcher of the Year. He averaged 12.5 strikeouts and 2.9 walks per nine innings.
Baseball America ranks him Boston’s top pitching prospect and fifth best prospect overall.
He’s listed No. 86 on Keith Law’s Top 100 prospect list (The Athletic).
Potts clears waivers
Hudson Potts, who the Red Sox designated for assignment earlier this week, has cleared waivers. He was outrighted to minor league camp.
The Red Sox initially acquired Potts with Jeisson Rosario from the Padres for Mitch Moreland at the 2020 deadline. He batted just .217 with a .264 on-base percentage, .399 slugging percentage, .663 OPS, 11 homers and 18 doubles in 78 games for Portland last year.
Boston also designated Rosario earlier this week to make room on the 40-man roster for Trevor Story.
