Many in the Coastal Bend area smelled smoke outside Friday morning due to two wildfires.

According to the Texas A&M Forest Service, the Hayfield South fire in Kenedy County had burned at least 5,000 acres as of 9:30 a.m. The fire was 35% contained. A wind shift in the area caused the fire to grow with two active fire fronts last night, the agency shared on social media.

Another fire, called the Lab East fire in Duval County, had burned at least 100 acres as of 9:30 a.m. and was 50% contained.

According to the Texas A&M Forest Service, the Hayfield South fire in Kenedy County burned at least 5,000 acres as of 9:30 a.m. Friday, March 25, 2022.

The Texas A&M Forest Service said the accelerated drying of dead surface fuel is ongoing and will continue through the weekend, especially along and west of I-35 and into South Texas.

According to the National Weather Service in Corpus Christi, an elevated fire danger will continue through Saturday and Sunday with dry and breezy conditions. Smoke can be smelled in the area due to a shift in the wind toward the Corpus Christi and Portland area.

"Stay cautious of any outdoor activity that may cause a spark!" the agency said in a post.

The city of Corpus Christi said the area's particle pollution levels remained elevated on Friday due to controlled burns across southeastern portions of Texas and the Coastal Bend.

The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality recommends those with asthma or other lung conditions limit their outdoor activity throughout the weekend.
