Nevada is trying to expand a need that was highlighted during the pandemic -- lower cost childcare and incentive to keep workers at child care facilities.
Governor Sisolak announced a $160 million investment into childcare during his State of the State address.
The governor visited Western Nevada College (WNC) Thursday, where the campus has a child development center.
Right now, the center told News 4 & Fox 11 they are at capacity and have been for a number of years.
Wait lists at this facility start before a child is even born in some cases, said Anna Lisa Acosta-Rogers, Director of the Child Development Center.
Acosta-Rogers said she saw the difference the investment made almost immediately. She added that so far three weeks of free tuition has been given to every single family enrolled as a part of this state support.
According to Acosta-Rogers:
It is a fantastic feeling, to know, to hear somebody like the governor say we need to expand these types of services. It was great to hear how essential we were at the beginning of COVID. We have known that for a really long time and it is great that somebody in his position to know that and acknowledge that and I hope something gets done with it.
Rogers said they really need more staff and more space in addition to the lowered costs. She hopes the effort continues to expand.
