CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) - A memorial service was held in memory of Aliza Sherman at Erieview Plaza on Thursday, nine years after she was murdered. At the spot where she was murdered a field of flowers

Family members and friends of the Cleveland Clinic nurse gathered at the scene where Aliza was stabbed 11 times and murdered outside of her attorneys office on March 24th of 2013. The Beachwood woman was going through a long, drawn out, messy divorce that was set to go to trial at the time.

Sherman’s family is still looking for answers in the case. Her son Jason Sherman told all those gathered in person and on Zoom he hates this day, “It’s also just kind of a harsh reality. I’m just looking out as my sister was talking and I saw over 50 cars drive by, I’ve seen 50 people walk by. This was the time of day 9 years ago, in the middle of the day, it was sunny outside where my mom was stabbed 11 times. So, it’s impossible that nobody saw anything. That no one knows anything this.”

Aliza’s daughter, Jennifer Sherman told loved ones and friends the heartbreak will never go away, “Nine years obviously sounds like a long time, but when you think about it it’s actually 3,287 days today since we last got to speak to our mom or see our mom. And it’s also been 3,287 days since a killer committed a horrific crime, and it’s been 3,287 days without any justice, without anyone held accountable. It’s heartbreaking to us that we’re still standing here 3,287 days, which has been 3,287 opportunities to hold someone accountable.”

But Aliza’s family and friends do have a sense of renewed hope since BCI, the state’s crime lab and investigators took over the case in August. A representative with BCI says they are still going through all the evidence from Cleveland Police and prosecutors, and for now there are no new leads, but they family feels the state’s resources and experience could make the difference in this case, “Absolutely I think their capabilities with updated technology, DNA testing, forensics -- even just the way they’re organized down there at the state level.”

One piece of evidence in the case is grainy surveillance video showing a suspect running away from the scene, but in nearly a decade that person has never been identified.

Aliza’s attorney Gregory Moore who was handling her divorce was sentenced to six months in prison after pleading to falsification during the investigation. Moore according to police sent text messages before and after the victim’s murder. The messages to the victim indicated Moore was in his office at the time of the murder, but phone records, electronic key card records and witness statements conflicted with Moore’s claims. But no one has even been charged with Aliza’s murder.

The victim’s family is hoping to hear more information from the city’s homicide task force, as they believe they have an idea who the killer could be.

There is still a $100,000 reward by Cleveland Police if you can provide information that leads to an arrest and prosecution in the Aliza Sherman case. Tips can remain anonymous, just call: (216) 623-5464 or (216) 252-7463.
