The Padres beat the Angels 3-0 on Wednesday at Peoria Stadium.

Batter’s box: Jorge Alfaro, one of four catchers in camp with a chance to make the team or provide trade currency, hit his second home run of the spring and drove in a run with a single. While the Padres are in need of at least one more outfielder and Alfaro started 18 games in left field for the Marlins last season, manager Bob Melvin has said Alfaro is strictly a catcher. … Designated hitter Luke Voit lined a double down the left field line for his first hit with the Padres. … Nomar Mazara, trying to make the team as an extra outfielder, was 1-for-2 and is 3-for-10 this spring.

Balls and strikes: Left-hander MacKenzie Gore continued his strong spring by striking out five and allowing one hit in three scoreless innings. The Padres’ top pitching prospect, who is projected to begin the season in Triple-A, has allowed one hit and walked none while striking out seven in five innings in two starts. … Dinelson Lamet took just 10 pitches to get through a perfect inning in his spring debut. He struck out two. … Bullpen regulars Craig Stammen, Pierce Johnson and Emilio Pagàn worked perfect innings.

Extra bases: Jake Cronenworth made his first Cactus League appearance, starting at second base and going 0-for-2 while playing three innings. The Padres were being careful with him after he suffered an adductor strain in February. … CJ Abrams, the Padres’ No.1 prospect, made a backhand grab in the hole near the grass and threw out a runner to end the top of the eighth inning. Abrams was 0-for-1 at the plate. … The Padres stopped a losing streak at four games.

On deck: The Padres are off Thursday. RHP Nick Martinez starts Friday against the Dodgers (6:05 p.m.) in Phoenix.
