The Red Sox made their first round of spring training cuts Wednesday.
Shortstop/second baseman Jeter Downs and pitchers Bryan Mata, Connor Seabold, Josh Winckowski and Jay Groome have been optioned to Triple-A Worcester.
Non-roster invitees Triston Casas (first base), David Hamilton (shortstop), Christian Koss (shortstop), Durbin Feltman (pitcher), Brian Keller (pitcher) and Chris Murphy (pitcher) were reassigned to minor league camp.
Seabold and Winckowski are expected to begin the 2022 season in Worcester’s starting rotation.
Groome will either start the season in Worcester or Portland’s starting rotation. Him being optioned to Worcester is procedural at this point. It has not yet been decided where he’ll start the season, but Portland seems like a likely destination considering he started only three games there last year.
Mata is rehabbing from Tommy John surgery. He hopes to return to game action in June or July.
Downs, the top prospect acquired in the Mookie Betts trade, will return to Worcester after struggling there last year.
Casas is the top Red Sox prospect who was invited to major league camp. Baseball America ranks him No. 19 on its Top 100 list. He’ll begin the season at Worcester, where he finished last year.
