Half-dozen all-staters: Marquette has 6 players, coach earn Michigan coaches’ high school hockey awards

MARQUETTE — The only team that Marquette didn’t get any representation on was honorable mention.

Instead, the Redmen hockey team gained all its honors at a higher level when a half-dozen of its players landed on the First and Second teams when the Michigan High School Hockey Coaches Association recently announced its postseason awards.

In addition, head coach Doug Garrow was named a Coach of the Year.

Awards were handed out in each of the MHSAA’s three divisions. Marquette is in Division 2.

One MSHS player, freshman Kody Moyer, actually earned two awards as he was placed with the D-2 Second Team forwards while also earning a similar all-division First Team honor on the MHSHCA’s All-Freshman Team.

Only a dozen players statewide over all three divisions made the freshman honor list. And a scan of the other freshman honorees showed Moyer was the only All-Freshman Team member who made a “regular” all-state list, too.

Topping the overall honors for Marquette, though, was senior defenseman Brayden Grange and junior forward Jacob Garrow on the D-2 First Team.

Moyer was joined on the Second Team by teammate and senior forward Drew Dellies, junior defenseman Joe DeMattia and sophomore goaltender Wylen Cambensy.

In Division 2, there were just 12 forwards, six defensemen and three goalies named to the First Team; and 14 forwards, seven defensemen and three goalies making both the Second Team and honorable mention.

And there were just two coaches named as a Coach of the Year in Division 2, Garrow and Hartland’s Rick Gadwa, the coach of the team that defeated Marquette in the D-2 semifinals and Trenton in the finals, both by identical 3-2 overtime scores two days apart about two weeks ago.

Also like Marquette, Hartland had a half-dozen players recognized by the MHSHCA, though all six were on the First Team.

One other Upper Peninsula player earned recognition in Division 2, Escanaba’s Sawyer LaMarch as an honorable mention forward.

In Division 3, four U.P. schools had a total of nine players recognized. On the First Team was Calumet forwards Jackson Rilei and Paul Sturos, defenseman Tom Erikkila and goalie Aksel Loukus, along with Houghton forward Camden Markham.

Making the Second Team was Houghton forward Gaborik Carlson and defenseman Kade Farrell, plus Hancock defenseman Chad Nordstrom, and getting honorable mention was Sault Ste. Marie forward Evan Hoglund.

One other U.P. player made the All-Freshman Team, Houghton defenseman Oscar Peterson.
