The Department of Public Safety identified a man who was tragically killed while evacuating ahead of the wildfires that threatened May.
According to DPS, Jerry Burnett, 78, was evacuating when he was killed in a traffic accident Sunday night around 10:20pm on U.S. Highway 183, 3.3 miles south of May. According to a press release, Burnett was driving a 2005 Buick LeSabre headed south when Burnett pulled to the shoulder to make a U-turn.
As he began the U-turn, he drove into the path of a southbound 2006 Chevrolet K1500, driven by Carl N. Alden, male, 78, of May. The pickup struck Burnett's Buick on the left side.
Burnett was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. Alden was treated for injuries and released, he was reported to be wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, Burnett was not.
