Shunsuke Nakamura reveals what he told Kyogo before joining Celtic

It is safe to say that Kyogo is one of the biggest transfer masterstrokes that Celtic have pulled off in a long time. In many ways, he was the one who got the Hoops’ season going after a difficult start under the management of Ange Postecoglou. And he has already written his name in the club’s history books by scoring an incredible brace in the Scottish League Cup final against Hibernian despite not being 100 per cent fit on the day.

He has also become one of the most popular players amongst Celtic fans in a long, long time. It is easy to forget though that things were not always this rosy.

A lot of questions were raised when Celtic decided to sign Kyogo from Vissel Kobe. At the time, there were doubts surrounding Postecoglou as well and nobody knew what to expect from what was looking like an experimental season on the part of the club.

Shunsuke Nakamura has now revealed what he told Kyogo before his move to Parkhead. As reported by 67 Hail Hail, he told the Celtic View [Volume 57, Issue 3, page 37]:

"“I told him ‘At every opportunity, the Scottish media would compare you with me. But don’t mind that, just enjoy playing in Scotland’. There were other Asian players like Cha Du-Ri and Ki Sung-Yeung over the years, so I told them just to enjoy their game and not worry about the comparisons.”"

Nakamura himself had enjoyed a brilliant spell at Celtic and incredibly, continues to play on to this day, back in Japan, even at the age of 43. The midfielder produced some moments of brilliance during his time at the club that will always be remembered by fans, especially some of his free-kicks.

Kyogo will surely be looking to leave that sort of a legacy at Celtic as well and he is well on his way to achieving that already.

Right now, Kyogo is out injured though and has been out since December. And one can only hope that he is back in action as soon as possible. He has been pictured training on his own recently.
