A brand new season of HBO‘s True Detective is currently in development — without its creator Nic Pizzolatto at the helm.

Award-winning Mexican producer Issa Lopez (Tigers Are Not Afraid, Secondary Effects) has been tapped to pen a script for Season 4 which has been dubbed True Detective: Night Country. Barry Jenkins is attached to exec produce the anthology, the pilot for which will be directed and exec produced by Lopez should the network move forward with filming once a deal has been formalized.

Season one of the series stars Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, who are expected to return as executive producers as they had been on all three previous seasons of the Emmy-winning HBO show. Jenkins, who currently has an overall deal to HBO, will exec produce via his Pastel banner with the company’s Adele Romanski and Mark Ceryak also on board as EPs. Anonymous Content will once again produce.

Pizzolatto will also likely be credited as an exec producer though he is not expected to be formally involved in a fourth season. Pizzolatto parted ways HBO in January 2020 after a meeting with executives. He had an overall deal with HBO that was renewed twice during his time with the network. Since HBO owns the rights to True Detective, its success encouraged the show to be revisited with a new writer and central producer.

HBO and HBO Max boss Casey Bloys told The Hollywood Reporter in February that “we’ve been developing various ideas” of the True Detective franchise, so news of its revival does not come as a surprise.

The first season of True Detective scored 12 Emmy nominations with Pizzolatto taking home the Emmy for writing as part of the show’s five total wins that year. The franchise, through three seasons, has earned more than 20 nominations.

Jenkins has spent a number of years developing The Underground Railroad at Amazon under his first-look deal with the streamer. He is also known for his role as writer and director of Oscar winner Moonlight.
