As Fred Hoiberg begins looking ahead to the 2022-23 college basketball season, he’s making some serious changes to his staff. Earlier this week, it was announced he was parting ways with key assistant Matt Abdelmassih. On Friday, it was announced that Doc Sadler would also not be retained.

Sadler had been on Hoiberg’s staff at Nebraska since he was brought to Lincoln three years ago. He was also previously the head coach at Nebraska from 2006-12.

Last year, Sadler moved from an on-court assistant into a special assistant role with the program.

“Doc has given his heart and soul to the Nebraska basketball program twice in his coaching career, and we appreciate all his contributions to the success of Husker basketball,” Hoiberg said in a statement. “Doc has a great basketball mind and has been a valuable resource on our coaching staffs both here and at Iowa State. I wish him nothing but the best in the future.”

Nebraska is bringing Hoiberg back for the 2022-23 season but because of struggles in the first three years, there’s an urgency for the Huskers to win. Nebraska is just 24-67 the last three seasons, including last year’s 10-22 campaign.

Hoiberg also released a statement when parting ways with Abdelmassih.

“Matt and I have a close relationship dating back to our time in the front office with the Timberwolves,” Hoiberg said in a statement. “He was a big part of our success at Iowa State and played a leading role in building our roster at Nebraska. I wish Matt and his family nothing but the best.”
