Two Berks high school grads have advanced to the quarterfinals with a pair of wins Thursday on the first day of the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships at Detroit.

Exeter grad Austin DeSanto at 133 pounds and Boyertown grad Jordan Wood at 285 remain in the hunt for gold.

DeSanto, a redshirt senior at Iowa who is seeded fifth, defeated Air Force’s Sidney Flores by technical fall in 4:09 in the first round, then defeated Pitt’s Micky Phillippi 5-2. He will face fourth-seeded Korbin Myers of Virginia Tech today in the quarterfinals.

DeSanto finished third last year.

Wood, a fifth-year senior at Lehigh who is seeded sixth, defeated West Virginia’s Michael Wolfgram 1-0 in the first round, then beat Oregon State’s Gary Traub 6-0. He will face third-seeded Tony Cassiopppi today in the quarters.
