On October 23, 1989, Carol and her husband Charles were shot on their way home from a birthing class at Boston’s Brigham & Women’s Hospital. Charles, who went by Chuck, told the police that a Black man in his 30s wearing an Adidas track suit had perpetrated the crime.

The friends lived in the same Berkshire Apartments complex in Winter Haven, Florida, but Charles's car broke down while out. He had to walk home but stopped by Christina's apartment to ask if he could borrow her vehicle. This was the last time anyone saw Christina Voltaire since that day.
