The University of Florida reportedly removed a dedication to Karl Marx after a Campus Reform report highlighted one of the university’s study rooms was named after him.
Marx, the author of The Communist Manifesto, is considered to have laid the foundation for the rise of contemporary socialist and communist movements throughout the world.
Before the room’s name was changed, it had a plaque and description lauding Marx as a “philosopher, radical economist, and revolutionary critic.”
The room was among several others named after a wide range of influential individuals who have made a great impact on the world, including Benjamin Franklin, Martin Luther King Jr., and William Shakespeare.
According to a report from nonprofit Victims of Communism (VOC), 30% of young Americans considered a part of “Generation Z” have a favorable view of Marxism. Forty-nine percent hold a favorable view of socialism, the report indicated.
“In a year where Bernie Sanders and lawmakers such as AOC and The Squad normalized socialism as top-tier politicians, and young Americans have taken to the street to protest inequality, it’s clear socialism, communism, and Marxism have a new appeal to Americans,” said VOC’s Executive Director Marion Smith. “When one-in-four Americans want to eliminate capitalism and embrace socialism, we know that we have failed to educate about the historical and moral failings of these ideologies.”
The University of Florida told The National Desk that given the current events in Ukraine and elsewhere in the world it determined it was appropriate to remove Karl Marx's name, which was placed on the group study room in 2014.
