Joe Flacco, Jets Agree to New 1-Year Contract Worth Reported $3.5M

Joe Flacco will be back with the New York Jets in 2022 as the No. 2 quarterback behind Zach Wilson.

JL Sports, the agency that represents Flacco, tweeted congratulations to the 37-year-old quarterback:

Per ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, Flacco's deal with the Jets is worth $3.5 million.

This will be Flacco's third year playing for the Jets. He originally signed with the team as a free agent in May 2020 and started four games that season. The Delaware alum finished with 864 yards, six touchdowns, three interceptions and a 55.2 completion percentage.

The Philadelphia Eagles signed him as a free agent before the 2021 season. He didn't appear in a game for the team before being traded to New York midway through the season after Wilson sprained his PCL in Week 7 against the New England Patriots.

After an injury to backup Mike White and poor play by Josh Johnson, Flacco made his only start of the season in Week 11 against the Miami Dolphins. The Super Bowl XLVII MVP went 24-of-39 for 291 yards and two touchdowns in a 24-17 loss.

Flacco has an 0-5 career record as the Jets starting quarterback. He has spent the past four seasons primarily as a backup since Lamar Jackson replaced him as the Baltimore Ravens starter midway through the 2018 campaign.

From 2008 to 2017, Flacco averaged 3,578 passing yards and 20 touchdowns per season for the Ravens. He had one of the best postseason runs by any quarterback after the 2012 season with 1,140 yards, 11 touchdowns and no interceptions in four games to lead Baltimore to a Super Bowl victory.

Wilson's development will be the biggest key for the Jets to have success in 2022 and beyond.

Flacco's veteran presence gives the coaching staff a steady option in the event Wilson suffers an injury.
