Wilson grad Chad Henne is returning to be the backup quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs.

Henne, who turns 37 in July, has agreed to a one-year $2 million deal with the Chiefs, according to Mike Garafolo of the NFL Network.

This will be Henne’s fifth season with Kansas City, where he has served as Patrick Mahomes’ backup. He won a Super Bowl ring following the 2019 season.

Last season, Henne appeared in four games, completing 11-of-16 passes for 82 yards.

He had signed a two-year deal with the Chiefs prior to the 2020 season after previously signing a two-year, $6.7 million contract with Kansas City in 2018.

In the playoffs following the 2020 season against Cleveland, Henne replaced Mahome, who suffered a concussion, and helped the Chiefs clinch a 22-17 win. With Kansas City trying to preserve its lead late in the fourth quarter, Henne ran for 13 yards on a third-and-14 from the Chiefs’ 35. That set up his 5-yard pass to Tyreek Hill on fourth-and-1. The Chiefs then ran out the clock.

Henne spent most of 2019 on injured reserve after fracturing his ankle in the preseason. He was activated Nov. 2, but did not appear in any games. He was the team’s No. 3 quarterback behind Mahomes and Matt Moore, who was signed after Henne was injured.

Moore ended up starting two games in place of an injured Mahomes.

Henne, a second-round pick by Miami in the 2008 draft, spent the first four seasons of his career with the Dolphins, then the next seven with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

He has completed 59.6% of his passes for 13,290 yards with 60 touchdowns and 63 interceptions in 75 career games, 54 of them starts.
