Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne welcomes second son with poignant Ukraine tribute

Oklahoma City rock star Wayne Coyne is welcoming his second son with a poignant tribute to war-torn Ukraine.

Wayne Coyne talks about how the conversion of The Flaming Lips former art gallery The Womb into artist collective Factory Obscura's headquarters Saturday, March 9, 2019.

The frontman of the Grammy-winning art-rock band The Flaming Lips announced on Instagram that his wife, Katy, gave birth March 13 to the couple's second baby boy.

Wayne and Katy Coyne were married in January 2019 in Oklahoma City. In true Flaming Lips fashion, the couple tied the knot inside one of the frontman's signature giant plastic "space bubbles."

The couple welcomed to their older son, Bloom, in June 2019 at Oklahoma City's Mercy Hospital. Coyne, who turned 61 in January, told The Oklahoman in a 2019 interview that he had found joy in fatherhood.

"I have the best life ever. I get to wake up and do my thing, and now I have this little baby running around. And he's just a bundle of joy. I don't know how most people's little babies are, but he's just wonderful. He gives you energy, he gives you happiness, he gives you everything. And we wonder, 'What were our lives before he was here?' It's the best thing ever; we're so lucky," Coyne said.

Rock star wishes for a future of peace and love in birth announcement

To announce the birth of his second child, the singer, songwriter and visual artist shared in his March 15 Instagram post a photograph of his wife in the hospital. He paired that photo with a now-viral image of a pregnant woman in Ukraine being rushed to an ambulance on a stretcher.

The woman and her baby died after a Russian bombing on the maternity hospital where she was meant to give birth.

Coyne wrote on Instagram that seeing the harrowing photo "really hit home for us ... then to see the news that she (and her unborn child) had died … not from a tornado or earthquake or an accident ... they died because one man decided to drop bombs on them."

The rock star expressed gratitude that he and Bloom were able to sit with his wife in a safe, clean hospital room surrounded by "wonderful hard working nurses and doctors and health-care staff helping us and loving us" while the new baby was born.

"All this is here because of PEACE and LOVE ... we are soooo lucky. ... LOVE is all that matters. ... PEACE allows LOVE to do its work," Coyne posted.

"I hope to make a future for our 2 little boys where the only reason ANY human has ANY power ... is because they have the power of love and power of peace."

The Coynes have not yet revealed their new son's name or released any photos of the baby.

But the singer often shares photos on Instagram of his adventures with their older son, who starred in The Flaming Lips' 2020 music video for their holiday song "A Change at Christmas (Say It Isn't So)."
