For the second straight year, Jeremy Lee’s baseball season has been cut short.
The South Alabama pitcher will be sidelined for the remainder of the 2022 season due to elbow issues that will require surgery, Jaguars coach Mark Calvi said in a radio interview Tuesday. Lee last pitched on March 7, throwing two innings in a loss to Southern Miss.
“Jeremy Lee will be done for the rest of the season,” Calvi said during an appearance on “Inside the Jaguars” on Mobile’s SportsTalk 99.5 FM. “We’re going to have his elbow looked at. He was still a little bit uncomfortable last week, although he was 90-95 (mph) in those two innings, he still doesn’t feel right. We kind of went down every route we could this year with therapy. We don’t think it’s anything major, but it was enough to still bother him. So (doctors are) going to go in there and get a look at it.
“… That’s a blow to us. But we hope it’s for the better and he can pitch pain-free. We think it will a minimal procedure and minimal time off. We think it’s more like a six-month recovery, rather than a full year. Hopefully we can get a better version of him in the fall.”
Lee, a sophomore from Valley Grand, had made three appearances (one start) this season for the Jaguars, working on a pitch count. In eight innings, he allowed one earned run on eight hits with three walks and five strikeouts.
Lee was a Freshman All-American in 2021, and emerged as the Jaguars’ Friday night starter. He went 3-2 with a 3.46 ERA and 68 strikeouts in 52 innings before being shut down in early May due to elbow discomfort.
South Alabama (11-3) is at New Orleans on Tuesday night, then opens Sun Belt Conference play at home Friday vs. UT Arlington.
