ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) – Roanoke City Councilman Robert Jeffrey, Jr. was found guilty of two counts of obtaining money by false pretenses.

Circuit Court Judge David Carson read aloud the jury’s verdict on Tuesday, March 15.

“Mr. Jeffrey, in accordance in with the verdicts of the jurors which this court has specifically confirmed. I find you guilty as charged in the indictments,” said Carson.

The prosecution laid out in court, the fact that Jeffrey received $7,500 in CARES Act funding for full-time employees at this property management business and another $7,500 for full-time employees for ColorsVA Magazine.

“The defendant presented false facts. The defendant intended the defray the EDA. The defendant told a lie on the two applications, and would not have received $7,500, times two, to equal $15,000,” said Sheri Manson, chief prosecutor for the Commonwealth’s Attorney.

Jeffrey’s lawyer, Jonathan Kurtin, claims that Jeffrey wasn’t the person applying for those grants, nor was he the person depositing the cash.

He claims this case is really about identity theft.

“Somebody using the identity that no one knows that exactly who it was made these applications, but that’s the key question…who made these applications?” asked Kurtin.

Jeffrey will be sentenced at a later date, and could possibly face up to 20 years.
